Paths Of Possession: The end of the hour
12/11/07 || Euthanatos
Paths Of Possession is an interesting band. Sure, they have their ups and downs, mostly downs, but I still manage to find good stuff in their catalog.
I think Corpsegrinder is one hell of a vocalist, and fuck you if you think otherwise, and it’s cool to see him in a totally different environment. Yes, it’s still death metal, but it’s a lot slower-paced and “comprehensible” than what you would normally get in Cannibal Corpse.
“The End of the Hour”, the band’s latest offering, is far from brilliant. But it has some moments of beauty. Yes, beauty, damn it. “The Ancient Law” and “I Am Forever” are some of these rather exquisite moments, where riffs, vocals and melody all blend in to make ravishing delight. Okay, I’m ready to suck some 12 inch cock now.
Fact of the matter is, I really like some of the riffs thrown around here by Jay Fossen and Jack Goodwin. Alas, may I draw your attention to the word some, meaning, not all. Unfortunately this album fails to draw your attention for long periods of time. There just isn’t enough going on here to keep you focused or mildly interested.
It’s a concept album too, so one should at least be keen to understand what’s going on. Well, I wasn’t. All I know is, some man suffers, dies, gets some weird powers to end all life, everyone dies. Wow. Captivating. Really. The production isn’t all that either. The good musicianship and excellent vocals make up for it, but still, a clearer approach would have done wonders for this. Maybe next time, fellas. Or not. Now, back to listening Cannibal Corpse.
The cover: the world ending in demonic agony.
5 your best just isn’t good enough out of 10.
